Biostimulators are a popular cosmetic injectable capable of rejuvenating the face, decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and lines, and, most importantly, boosting the body’s natural supply of collagen and elastin. Sculptra®, for example, is a PLLA injectable. This Poly-L-Lactic Acid substance stimulates the natural growth of new collagen for progressive results months after your injection treatment is complete. In addition to facial rejuvenation, you restore facial volume over time and dramatically improve the skin’s texture.

How do biostimulators work?

Some people say that biostimulators are the secret to aging naturally. This innovative injectable formula stimulates collagen rather than just filling in space. It enhances temporal depressions, hollow temples and eyes, and deep nasal animal folds. By re-filling the lost volume, these injections restore youth to the face. You will notice a more dramatically youthful appearance after about 2-4 sessions. This injectable is the best way to achieve long-lasting and discreet facial rejuvenation without surgery.

“I love to talk with the patient about their aesthetic goals, what facial features they enjoy, and what changes in their face have they noticed that they don’t like.” -Dr. Steve

What can I expect during treatments?

During your treatment, your injection specialist will apply numbing cream to the treatment area(s) as needed. Once numb, your face is injected with the biostimulator with ultrasound guidance to avoid risks or complications. Your specialist makes an initial puncture with the needle and uses this opening to glide the blunt cannula to inject the product into the desired areas. After the treatment, you will need to massage the area for about 5 minutes. This is to be completed daily for 5 days after your treatment. This step is considered a vital part of Sculptra® injections as it helps the biostimulating microparticles get evenly distributed, and it also promotes collagen stimulation.

Dr. Steve and his team of experts at Boston Direct Health strive to ensure your treatment is performed in the most sterile, relaxing environment. Numbing agents and tools are available to ensure your safety and comfort during all injection treatments.

What can I expect from the results?

You may begin to notice subtle results within a month of the injections. Your results will manifest as an overall rejuvenation, and it will continue to improve as the new collagen production picks up. This can sometimes take 6 months to form. As always, individual experiences will vary per person.

What areas do biostimulators address?

Sculptra® injections are FDA-approved to treat several areas of the face for full facial rejuvenation. These treatment areas include:

  • Temple
  • Cheeks
  • Tear troughs
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Oval contouring
  • Marionette lines
  • Mental crease

In addition, Sculptra® is also capable of treating various areas of the body, including the buttocks, hips, thighs, and upper arms.

Biostimulators vs. dermal fillers

Biostimulators and dermal fillers are both considered effective anti-aging injectables. They each address lost volume, wrinkles, creases, fine lines, and other aging concerns.

However, there is a big difference between the injection substances. Sculptra® is an injectable biostimulator. Its formula is made of Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and has a liquid consistency. Sculptra® is injected into the tissues and stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. Sculptra® injections provide progressive results that are apparent over time with a course of treatments. It takes time for the body to build collagen. Most people will notice their Sculptra® results within 2-4 sessions. Sculptra® does provide more long-term results, sometimes up to 25 months.

On the other hand, dermal fillers are often made of Hyaluronic Acid. This clear gel is primarily used to temporarily replace missing volume. It does not stimulate collagen production like biostimulators. In addition, dermal fillers are noticeable almost immediately following the injections. Dermal fillers do provide immediate anti-aging results, unlike Sculptra®. But the results are more temporary and do not last as long as biostimulator results.

What are the benefits of Renuva® and Radiesse®?

Renuva® is a new treatment that tackles age-related fat loss by using the body’s own fat. It’s the first ready-made solution of its kind. When you get this treatment through injections, it acts as a support structure, helping your body generate its own fat safely and effectively. Even though Renuva® doesn’t stay in the body forever, it gets naturally removed by the body and gets replaced with your own fat. The results are long-lasting because your body keeps the fat just like it normally does. Studies indicate that, on average, human fat cells can hang around for up to 10 years, although this duration varies from person to person.

Radiesse® is the first and only CaHA (calcium hydroxylapatite) injectable treatment in the U.S. When injected, CaHA particles integrate into the skin and create a “scaffold” that stimulates the production of elastin and collagen. This new network of collagen fibers results in increased facial volume and the smoothing of fine lines and facial folds. Results can last up to 1 year or more in many patients.

Do biostimulators last longer than other fillers?

Yes, biostimulators last longer. Regular fillers are typically metabolized over a 10 to 12-month period. On the other hand, Sculptra® is made of PLLA, the same material as sutures used for surgical stitching. Most people can enjoy their facial rejuvenation for around 2 years, sometimes as long as 4 years, depending on your body.

Is there downtime after biostimulators?

Most people can expect to experience mild soreness and swelling at the injection site for close to 1 week. This soreness may be felt until the Sculptra® incorporates into the tissues. In addition, bruising can occur. However, this risk is minimal with the use of ultrasound, helping the injection specialist avoid vessels, and with the use of blunt-tip microcannulas.
